We currently have three classes located at Green Bay High School for our secondary age students, as well as classes at our Base School site.
The classes at Green Bay High School are located in the heart of the school, and have been purpose built to provide modern flexible teaching spaces for our students.
The Base School has large classroom spaces, specially equipped care facilities and plenty of enclosed outdoor space for students to use independently and safely. There are also a number of shared spaces and facilities to meet student need, including a music therapy space, a sensory room, teaching kitchen and a large multi-purpose are that can be used for larger group activities and celebrations .
Students are grouped according to their learning needs and age where possible, and class sizes are kept small, with between 7 and 10 students per class. All classes are staffed well, with an experienced teacher leading the learning, supported by at least two teacher aides.
Students at the high school are provided with some opportunities to integrate with mainstream classes and students where appropriate. We also have a number of mainstream high school students who support our students in our own classes (reverse integration). We are very fortunate to be very much included in the Green Bay High School community, with students joining in events, such as sports day and the GBHS graduates ball.
Students at the Base School are included in all Oaklynn has to offer, as well as learning opportunities within our local community, for example swimming, visiting local beaches and cafes.
All our students have an individual education plan, which addresses their individual learning goals. Oaklynn seniors also follow the SPEC programme, with students participating in TRUMP or HEADWAY modules to facilitate their learning. SPEC is an NZ designed supported learning course that enables all students to access the NZ curriculum at whatever level they are working at.
Students at the high school initially follow the TRUMP programme, which provides learning opportunities in over eight curriculum areas, whilst working on their key competencies.
Students in our Base School classes usually complete SPEC Headway, that includes modules from areas including Environment, Life Skills, Leisure, Vocational, and Sensory modules.
All students are provided with a balanced curriculum, with Specialist teachers supporting class programmes and activities.
